Meet Hine Funaki, one of Float Well’s most bad-ass ambassadors! She has been using the float tank to help get into the right head space before a Muay Thai fight, as well as to help with her recovery afterwards.
Tell us a bit about yourself:
I’m a super busy person who is always juggling a lot and cramming so much into a day. I work at Victoria University where I mentor secondary students and prepare them for life after school, whether it is university, the workforce etc. When I’m not working, I’m doing mummy duties, chores, errands, fitting friends and family in around my Muay Thai training schedule.
When my life isn’t too hectic, I try and fit a Muay Thai fight in here and there. This training is pretty tough on the body and the mind. Training camp begins 6 weeks out from the fight day. Camp is full of intense training, cardio, strength, conditioning and technique. I’m normally up early in the morning for a gym workout or run and then fight training at night, mostly every day of camp. So, I need an escape.
Why do you love floating?
I love floating because it gives me time to switch off and have time to myself to think, visualise, relax, recover and re-charge. I find it helpful to float before a fight so that I can visualise my training, my warm up, my entrance, my feelings and my game plan. I also love post-training floats to recover and to remember what I feels like to be relaxed.
There have been a few faves for different reasons, but my most recent float was probably the most relaxed I’ve felt. I listened to the Rainforest sounds on a continuous track. The bird sounds were comforting and I fell asleep half way through. I didn’t want to leave. Another float, I listened to a Guided Visualisation track that guided me through a mental de-clutter. I found this track so helpful that it motivated me to draw straight afterwards. I love that every float is different for me.
What advice would you give to someone who is thinking of trying their first float?
Let go. Once you think your body is relaxed, relax it even more. If you stay still, you’ll eventually feel as though nothing is touching your skin, as though you are literally floating in the air.
What’s your favourite quote?
