One of the most common questions we’re asked is if we change the water between each person and many people are surprised that our answer is “no”. Saying that, the water in our float tank is likely to be some of the cleanest water you’ve ever been in! Let us explain…
Ever curious about what’s under the big white box? It’s our engine compartment & filtration system. Water maintenance is something we take very seriously at Float Well, as clean water is a cornerstone of running a great float centre. First off, every person showers thoroughly before they float. This ensures that body oil, hair products, lotions and other contaminants are washed off before entering the float tank. We supply you with luscious ecostore shampoo and body wash to use pre-float, which is free of chemicals and parabens. Each of our float tanks contains approximately 500kg magnesium sulphate (Epsom salt) which is a natural antimicrobial. Dr Oscar Pancorbo, a microbiologist and director of the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection stated “no pathogenic organisms can survive in salt concentrations above approximately 10 percent”. Our salt concentration, which is upwards of 35%, is three times higher making it basically unliveable for bacteria and pathogens.
After your float session ends, you’ll hear the tank’s engine turn on and the filtration system kick in. Public swimming pools and spas, which are used by many people at once, usually require all the water in the pool go through filters once every 6 hours. The water inside our float tanks pass through two filters 3-5 times between each and every person. The first filter picks up anything left behind such as a stray earplug or long hair while the second is a medical grade 10-micron filter which catches everything else. To give you some context, a human hair is approximately 100 microns wide, so our filters will catch anything a 10th of the size of a hair.
And we don’t stop there. We are committed to the highest standard of water quality and cleanliness, so in addition to our filtration system we administer 35% hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in combination with UV light treatment. The H2O2 helps break down organic matter so the filters can be even more effective and the UV light kills anything undesirable in the float tank, protecting the water from viruses, moulds and bacteria.
On top of all of this, we test and balance our float tank water chemistry daily and we routinely engage third-party lab testing to ensure its quality and cleanliness.

So to answer your question, no - we do not change the water between every floater. It would be environmentally-unfriendly, time-ineffective and extremely expensive if we were to dump and replace the float tank water between each person, but as you can see from our above processes, we take water maintenance very seriously to provide you with crystal clear, perfectly buoyant water every visit.
