Should You Eat Before a Float? Food, Water and Caffeine Explained
Yes, you should usually eat before a float, but what you eat and when you eat it can make a difference.
Arriving very hungry can make it difficult to settle, while eating a large meal immediately beforehand may leave you feeling uncomfortably full. For most people, a light meal or snack around one to two hours before floating provides a comfortable middle ground.
The same principle applies to water and caffeine. There is no complicated preparation required, but a few simple choices can help you feel more comfortable once the room becomes quiet.
When should you eat before a float?
Try to eat a light meal or snack approximately one to two hours before your appointment.
Once you are floating without the usual noise, movement and distractions, physical sensations can become more noticeable. A rumbling stomach may be surprisingly difficult to ignore. Equally, lying still after a large or heavy meal may feel uncomfortable.
There is no special “float diet”. Choose something familiar that you know sits comfortably, rather than experimenting with a particularly rich, spicy or heavy meal just before your appointment.

Can you float on an empty stomach?
You can, particularly if you normally feel comfortable without breakfast or are accustomed to fasting. However, there is no benefit to deliberately arriving hungry.
A float is designed to remove distractions. If hunger becomes the main thing you notice, it may take your attention away from the experience.
If it has been several hours since you last ate, a small snack before floating is usually a better option than trying to make it through your session on willpower alone.
If you manage a medical condition that affects your blood sugar, continue to follow the eating plan provided by your health professional.
How much water should you drink before floating?
Drink water normally throughout the day rather than consuming a large amount immediately before your appointment.
Being comfortably hydrated can help you feel settled, but drinking too much just before a float may leave you needing the bathroom halfway through. You can leave the tank if you need to, although getting out, showering and returning can interrupt the experience just as you are beginning to relax.
Can you drink coffee before a float?
You can, but caffeine may make it more difficult to slow down.
Coffee, energy drinks and other caffeinated products stimulate the nervous system. For some people, that means increased alertness, a faster heartbeat or a mind that feels busier than usual. None of those things will prevent you from floating, but they can make the transition into stillness take longer.
If you are sensitive to caffeine, consider avoiding it for several hours before your appointment. If you drink coffee every day, you do not necessarily need to skip it completely and risk arriving with a withdrawal headache. Having your usual coffee earlier in the day, or choosing a smaller serving, may be a better option.
The goal is not to follow a rigid rule. It is simply to avoid feeling overly stimulated when you are trying to settle.

What about nicotine?
Like caffeine, nicotine is a stimulant and may make it harder for your body to feel settled.
If possible, avoid smoking or vaping immediately before your appointment. Leaving some time between nicotine use and your float may help you arrive feeling calmer and more comfortable.
Should you drink alcohol before floating?
Avoid alcohol before your float.
Alcohol can affect balance, judgement, hydration and your ability to safely enter and exit the tank. If you arrive intoxicated, you will not be able to float. Save your celebratory drink after your session.
What should you eat and drink after a float?
There are no special requirements after floating. Drink some water and eat when you are ready.
Some people leave feeling hungry, particularly after a very relaxing session, while others prefer to take their time before eating. Follow your usual routine and notice what feels right for you.

A simple pre-float checklist
Before your float:
Eat a light meal or snack one to two hours beforehand.
Drink water normally throughout the day.
Avoid a large meal immediately before your appointment.
Limit caffeine and nicotine if they make you feel restless.
Do not drink alcohol before floating.
Use the bathroom before entering the tank.
Arrive 10–15 minutes early so you do not feel rushed.
Your preparation does not need to be perfect. If you have eaten lunch more recently than planned or had a coffee that morning, you can still have a good float. These suggestions are simply there to make the experience more comfortable.
